4 Ways to Care for Your Retainer
If you’ve ever had orthodontic treatment, then you’ve been reminded time and again about how important your retainer is. All that time and effort put into braces could be wasted if you don’t keep your teeth in their new alignment with a retainer.
Dr. Farooq Ahmad of Brackets Wires & Smiles offers the following tips to ensure that your retainer lasts you a long time.
1. Keep it in a Safe Place
When you’re not wearing your retainer, store it securely in a special, designated case. This way, you’ll always know where it is.
DO NOT leave your retainer laying on a surface in easy reach of kids and pets!
Avoid wrapping it up in a napkin while you’re eating – you’re more likely to accidentally throw it away when you do this.
2. Clean it Regularly
Always rinse your retainer after eating. Retainers can house lots of infectious germs and stinky odors if they are poorly taken care of. Brush it daily with a soft toothbrush to remove debris. Our office can let you know what cleaning and soaking products are safe for your retainer in particular.
3. Avoid Heat and Dryness
If the plastic on your retainer gets dried out or overheated, it can warp or crack. This change in shape will make it uncomfortable, at the least. And remember – no orthodontic retainers in the dishwasher, please!
4. Wear it!
Lastly, wearing your retainer as directed will enable you to get the most use out of your entire orthodontic treatment. When it’s securely in your mouth, you’re less likely to lose or damage it. Follow the instructions your orthodontic team gives you.
